EcoPhage Submits Second Biopesticide Application to U.S. EPA

EcoPhage a leader in the development and commercialization of sustainable phage-based biopesticides for bacterial plant diseases, announced the submission of EcoFire® to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) for regulatory approval. This marks the company’s second product submission, based on its proprietary research platform, developed together with the Weizmann Institute of Science.

EcoFire® is designed to control Fire Blight (Erwinia amylovora), a destructive bacterial disease affecting pears and apples. Symptoms include damage to blossoms, fruits, shoots, and branches, often leading to severe yield losses. Field trials conducted across multiple regions have demonstrated superior efficacy of EcoFire® compared to existing solutions.

This follows the late-2023 EPA submission of EcoPhage’s first product, GoldenEco®, which targets bacterial diseases in tomatoes and peppers, including Xanthomonas and Pseudomonas. EcoPhage anticipates regulatory approval for GoldenEco® later this year.

For decades, farmers have relied primarily on copper and antibiotics to combat bacterial plant diseases. However, growing resistance, heavy chemical footprints, regulatory restrictions, and declining effectiveness highlight the urgent need for safer and more sustainable alternatives. EcoPhage’s phage-based biopesticides are non-GMO, residue-free, and environmentally friendly, offering farmers effective tools to improve crop health, yield, and quality while reducing chemical dependency.

EcoPhage’s research platform enables development of various solutions to control bacterial diseases across crops, optimize the development costs, and shorten time to market for non-GMO, zero-residue products that provide equal or better control over bacterial diseases in crops and improve vigorous, yield and quality.

“Submitting our second product to the EPA underscores the strength and scalability of our research platform” comments Guy Elitzur, CEO of EcoPhage, “The industry is in urgent need of biological solutions that can be integrated in spraying programs and reduce the use of copper, antibiotics and other chemicals. At EcoPhage , we are delivering  exactly that, products backed by deep and rigorous science, and designed for real-world impact”.
